A downloadable game

You are everyday people, in an unjust world you want to change. Your goal is to resist exploitation, build communities, and ensure future generations will be able to grow up in a just and joyful era. Your power and independence have been taken by guile and force, leaving you to resist your oppressors in both the halls of government and in the streets of the cities.

BreakFree is a hopeful hack of John Harper's Lasers & Feelings. It's a one page RPG designed to be played in a few sessions and has simple and straightforward mechanics. This hack is heavily inspired by both past and current civil rights and revolutionary struggles.

Background art is open domain. Page 1 art is  "The Seed of Revolution" by Robert Spencer, and page 2 art is "Children playing revolution (19th Century" by Anonymous

"Background art generated by Wonder AI"
Not to be disrespectful, but... is the irony of writing a game about community-building, fighting exploitation, and engaging in anti-capitalist resistance, while using AI to generate your "art", not lost on you?

(-1)

A fair point! I think my concern had been about co-opting the art of a specific movemen if I'd used some public-domain piece, whereas AI could make something more like an amalgam of the style and elements of a lot of different pieces from across a lot of different movements, without biasing towards any single one in particular.

I agree with the comment, this feels very yucky to me to use AI, especially with a theme and a medium like this one. As an illustrator myself TTRPG is such a nice space where handmade illustration is still needed and valued, please don't let that change.

Plus the ecological + social cost and issues with AI are really... yeah, something.

I fully understand that paying an illustrator may be too much (even if it may be pretty cheap for one illustration), especially since your game is non-commercial.

Photobashing, using and modifying archive photos, doing a shitty drawing is infinitely more human and anticapitalist than using AI.

I get your point about not biasing toward a particular movement, but i think we should not erase the previous fights (especially not with AI). There was a lot of unafiliated protest, strikes and revolts.

Anyway sorry if this is a little harsh but I got your game with the Trans bundle and was as excited to play it as I was disappointed to see the AI picture

Thank you again for your feedback and patience. I've found some decent open domain pieces that I've swapped in place of the AI art, and have released an update.

Thanks for being open to criticism! I really like the open domain pieces! Really appreciate the change

See, I understand where you're coming from, but like... in using AI art, you already are co-opting specific movements, bcs the way AI art generators work is by taking previous pieces of art and mixing/recombining them.

If you had taken something from the public domain, you would be doing far less harm to the artists from the movements you're trying to celebrate in this piece than you are by using a machine that steals their work without credit or compensation. To say nothing of the outsized impact LLMs have on climate change, which is a threat to all progressive movements. I can see your heart was in the right place, but I'm afraid you're doing a helluva lot more harm than good here.

Like others here, I'm interested in this game, disappointed by the AI art, and I want to encourage you to rerelease this with public domain art or commissioned art. I'd feel much happier about playing it and your creation would be consistent with the ideals of the game.

How many players is this game intended for?

I would suggest 3-5. You can do more, but it will likely cause turns to take quite a bit longer.

Thank you!

Two-page RPG
I don't have Lasers & Feelings, but I wanted to get a feel for this and so I made a few quick selections, a few quick rolls and a single oracle roll to determine the entire outcome for the "New York Integrity Commission."
What I created sounded like an episode of Batman the Animated Series.
That's on me.
This is a nice game.
Thank you for sharing it.
